Why Should Credit Unions Get Involved?
Millions of modest income families do not turn to credit unions for their deposit and lending services. Instead many turn to alternative financial service (AFS) providers such as WalMart, check cashers or payday loan stores for basic financial transactions. These AFS providers receive huge profits from the most financially excluded citizens.
In contrast, credit unions are not-for-profit cooperatives with a strong tradition of helping families down the road to economic empowerment. Credit unions were established to help people build savings and avoid high cost lenders. Most credit unions consider serving emerging markets as a high priority. But many credit unions are searching for more and better information about how to reach out to these needy markets, how to design appropriate products, and how to mitigate their risks and expenses.
That’s where REAL Solutions® can help. With six years of experience behind the program and over 1,000 credit unions participating, REAL Solutions® has access to tested business models and strategies to help credit unions serve emerging markets. These markets include, but are not limited to young adults, immigrants, low wage workers, people with disabilities and seniors. REAL Solutions® supports models that make serving modest households a good business decision for credit unions, so that the result is a mutually beneficial and sustainable relationship.
